Tony Arzenta  (1973) (aka Big Guns)

Dir. Duccio Tessari

Starring Alain Delon, Richard Conte, Marc Porel Erica Blanc, Anton Differing

Mob hit man Tony Arzenta (Alain Delon) decides it's time to quit the business and concentrate on his family life. Afraid that a continued life in the criminal underworld will endanger his wife and child he consults his boss Nick (Richard Conte) who, after a meeting with rest of the mob bosses, concludes that Tony should be killed rather than see him retire. However, one morning when Tony's wife and son borrow his car to go shopping things take a turn for the worse as a bomb rigged to the car, meant for Tony, detonates killing them both as he watches on in horror. With nothing now left to live for Tony sets out to avenge the murder of his family. Enlisting the aid of his trusted cousin Dominico (Marc Porel sporting a fine 70's moustache and haircut) the pair embark on tracking down and killing those responsible. Pretty soon Interpol are on Tony's tail and try and persuade him to work for them helping them to ‘clear out all the scum' and work as their ‘hit man', he refuses, of course.

Despite this refusal Interpol don't arrest him and leave him to carry on his crusade unhindered. And carry on he does, and with style to boot! Featuring some incredibly frenetic car chases, with some great POV shots that prove Delon did a lot of his own driving, and some great set pieces: one of note being a particularly memorable shooting wherein Tony shoots a Mafioso and we see a fish tank explode behind him after the bullet passes through his body, very stylish stuff.

Director Duccio Tessari, more well known for his Spaghetti Westerns such as ‘A Pistol For Ringo' and 'The Return Of Ringo' does a great job with this film. There's plenty going on to keep any fan of Euro Crime thrillers happy and I dare say no one will be disappointed after seeing Alain Delon as Tony Arzenta, he pulls of this role with aplomb and shows just why he is one of Frances finest movie stars.
